As one of the professions set forth by NAFTA, biochemists who are citizens of Mexico or Canada may be eligible for TN status. Below are several sources that clarify the responsiblities of a biochemist. TN status is not necessarily granted to a biochemist as minimum educational requirements may apply.   • Analyze brain functions such as learning, thinking, and memory, and the dynamics of seeing and hearing.
  • Design and perform experiments with equipment such as lasers, accelerators, and mass spectrometers.
  • Develop and test new drugs and medications intended for commercial distribution.
  • Develop methods to process, store, and use foods, drugs, and chemical compounds.
  • Develop new methods to study the mechanisms of biological processes.
  • Examine the molecular and chemical aspects of immune system functioning.
  • Investigate the nature, composition, and expression of genes, and research how genetic engineering can impact these processes.
  • Isolate, analyze, and synthesize vitamins, hormones, allergens, minerals, and enzymes, and determine their effects on body functions.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations based upon research outcomes.
  • Research how characteristics of plants and animals are carried through successive generations.

Studies chemical processes of living organisms: Conducts research to determine action of foods, drugs, serums, hormones, and other substances on tissues and vital processes of living organisms. Isolates, analyzes, and identifies hormones, vitamins, allergens, minerals, and enzymes and determines effects on body functions. Examines chemical aspects of formation of antibodies, and conducts research into chemistry of cells and blood corpuscles. Studies chemistry of living processes, such as mechanisms of development of normal and abnormal cells, breathing and digestion, and of living energy changes, such as growth, aging, and death. May specialize in particular area or field of work and be designated Chemist, Clinical (profess. & kin.); Chemist, Enzymes (profess. & kin.); Chemist, Proteins (profess. & kin.); Chemist, Steroids (profess. & kin.).
